Martin - Crossbreed, Dog (2-3 Years)

Post  F on Tue Jan 17, 2012 9:52 am

Martin is an energetic and lively young boy who has come to use from the Pound, therefore we do not know any of his history.

Martin has shown that he is a well-mannered young lad who walks well on the lead. He loves nothing better than stretching his legs in the playpen. He knows his basic commands. He is yet untested with other dogs.

Martin - or Marty as I call him - is a lovely young dog with a lot of enthusiasm, but he is not a very big dog so his enthusiasm is not overpowering.

When I was walking another dog who was pulling toward Marty and barking, it was Marty who behaved like the grown-up and hardly reacted then walked on with his walker. We walked in parallel for a while and the other dog eventually calmed down, but Marty had done really well throughout.

Martin is usually last to go out which is a shame as he tries to hold it all in till he gets out....Lovely looking boy..this photo doesnt do him justice...he has beautiful dark eyes , just sits patiently in his kennel waiting for his turn....he comes out and cannot wait to go into the pen for a run round....will let you know if you are slow in throwing the ball...and while he is excitable in the pen...indoors he is quiet and well mannered....x:D

fab fella, needs work with sit as he still gets a little impatient waiting for a toy and will start to bark for it and jump up to get it if he thinks he can get away with it bounce Rolling Eyes but with patience and a few manners taught im sure this can be sorted..think he needs the Anne Peters touch! this guy is also super fast in the play pen and both nina and myself struggle to take pictures of him in action but he is great to watch.

A lad with potential

Post  annie on Thu Feb 02, 2012 11:40 pm

Had a really productive session with Marty today.

I was expecting trouble in the play area and, sure enough, as soon as he was aware I had a ball in my hand he started the demanding bark. I held the ball behind my back and repeated 'sit' and 'wait' and eventually he stopped barking for just long enough for me to throw the ball (without him telling me to). I then decided to use 2 balls instead of just 1 and I didn't get another bark. He ran back enthusiastically sometimes dropping the ball before he got back and he sat or even lay down when asked to 'wait' for the next ball to be thrown, and there was not a single demanding bark.

While having a little obedience session later on I realised that he may have been quite well trained, but I may be using unfamiliar cues. While I was trying to get him to 'wait' he clearly knew something was expected of him and tried everything he could think of! He tried lying down, giving a paw and barking. He was desperately trying to please - or trying to earn a treat! The lad clearly has potential.

Some dogs were just born to play - Martin; the epitome of playfulness. Never have I met a dog so willing to chase ball. The funny thing is though, for a dog so obviously in love with those spherical rubbery things, he'll return the ball every time, drop it, if not at your feet then in the vicinity, and then stand there patiently, wagging his tail, awaiting the next throw.

Something else I've noticed about Martin - very curious. He likes to get a good vantage point and survey his surroundings. Very endearing. His big watchful eyes, his slightly puzzled expression as he tries to work out what it is he's looking at... A charming dog. Reminds me a little bit of Goofy. But in a good way. Smile

Marty in his new home:

Post  pgrwebb on Wed Feb 29, 2012 9:42 pm

Marty is a brilliant addition to our family. He is surprisingly adaptable and well behaved. He seems very settled after just a week. He is good in the car and friendly with people and dogs (we haven't met a cat yet!)
If anything he is too friendly and has to say hello to absolutely everyone he meets on his walks. At night, he barks bravely at everything and everyone but usually from behind your legs! He loves his ball above all else but he is also extremely affectionate. The only problem is that in his head he is a small dog and he insists on behaving like a Yorkshire terrier. It is quite amusing if a little painful at times! He loves his walk on the common and the Malvern Hills especially if he can find a vantage point from which to watch the world go by.
We are all smitten by him : Smile
